As some of you know by reading my blog I have recently started Graphic Design, so between getting that up and running and Design School I have decided to resume the photography part of my business next summer 2010. I truly love photography, however with my new adventure and the process that it takes I need to focus on this for the remainder of the year. Once I have this off the ground I will combine the two and be back to Photographer/Designer. Within this time I will be taking off, I will be bettering my skills with photography as well and keeping up with all the latest trends and technicalities of the business… Once I am up & running again I hope to WOW people with my work.

Between getting the store up & running along with designing products for the store, working on Custom Designs and photo shoots I have been busy to say the least. I truly enjoy having massive amount of things going on at once I seem to operate better in these types of cases, however this has to be the busiest I have ever been so… It was definitely a challenge.

I still have many projects in the works for the store, between my Custom clients and premade designs… So keep checking back as new things will be added periodically until I get the store filled with lots of goodies.

Today I checked my email and I had 104 unread emails from just yesterday. I did manage to read all 79 from yesterday, however I have only got to a few from today. It wasn’t long ago I was lucky to have 25 a day Haha but every since I started to do Graphic Design my emails have been out of control. NOT that I don’t love it!!! I started my venture in the designing world about a month ago and I have been steadily busy every since! I LOVEEEE IT! I have worked with the most amazing people over this past month, helping them create their business identity and marketing material. I am still amazed by this new adventure into the designing world; seriously I am LOVING IT! I get to do 2 things I love to do, Photography and Designing :)

I have been venturing out in different things lately, one being new types of portrait taking, and the most excited thing lately has been designing. I have discovered I have a passion for designing as well as photography. I have been designing premade logos along with custom logos and I am really enjoying it!

I have been pretty fascinated with the rustic urban styled shoots I have been seeing lately, so I decided to give it a try. I like the basic outcome, however I think it kind of took some of the original detail away but all in all I really like them. Shaylee was all for the mini shoot Harmonie on the other hand wasn’t really feeling it.

EASTER 8 DAYS EARLY:

Yesterday we celebrated Easter because my husband who works in New York as a Merchant Marine has missed every holiday since the last 4th of July. SO we decided work wasn’t taken this holiday from us, not this year. We invited all of our closet friends and family and had an awesome time! The girls were up at 7:48 am and it was find the basket time from there… after getting a sugar high by 8:00am Haha we started getting the food and house ready for the ton of people who were showing up to help us celebrate Easter 8 days early. I would have to say it was one of the best Easters yet :) Thanks to everyone who helped make it an awesome day!

Michigan has been unusually warm for this time of the year, not that I am complaining because I have loved every second of it With the weather being awesome and the girls having cabin fever we decided to go hang out at the park for the day. While there I did manage to get a few snapshots of girls having fun! OMG you should have seen them on the bumpy slide they LOVED IT! I would have gotten some shots but I had to be right there to catch them or they would have went flying Haha I just love the age they are at right now, they are so experimental and fun! Now for the BUSY part my husband got home from New York last Wednesday and it’s been busy… busy every since… trying to buy THE RIGHT car can be so time consuming. I think we might have found the car we will be getting… nothing special just a Chevy Impala, however I take my time in these types of decisions just to be 100% sure, so we will be either finalizing the deal tomorrow or moving on to the next. On a different note my husband goes back to work (New York) tomorrow this time around was a short visit home due to a week of over time so next time around will be a big two weeks instead!

What is a Senior Ambassador you might be asking!? A Senior Ambassador is a Junior in High School and their duty is to help represent SJ Styles Photography by recruiting other seniors for their senior portraits.

The Senior Ambassador's will be given up to 50 Rep Cards (per needed) to hand out to potential senior clients. When a High School senior comes to SJ Styles for their senior portraits and turns in the Rep Card they were giving by the Senior Rep, the Senior Rep will then receive $10 per every recruit they make.

He’s played life and it’s been fun!

I LOVE MY GRAMPS… What an amazing man to say the least. I had the pleasure of following him around while he worked out on his farm over this past weekend (He didn’t even know) “wink” “wink” Got to love the zoom 70-300. Although towards the end I think he figured it out when he slightly waved at me. You know that wave like Hello but Go away… (Haha). So my daughter Keesha and I were sitting at his dining room table with him just listening to his life story. I can’t believe how much I never even knew!? Well he is my husband’s grandpa and he didn’t even know the half of it. Gramps was born in 1923 and started off in Illinois until his mother decided to move to the great lakes state where he found the love of his life in the 1940’s he then became a local farmer raising cows and misc. other animals, I mean the man even has a goat! Anyways through many great things in his life his biggest achievement has been to experience a love unlike any other a love that most people never experience in their lives. Still to this day gramps gets out of bed early AM and does all the house chores and farming needed to keep his farm/life going. This man is truly an inspiration to me I hope that when I get to his point in life, that I can look back and say I played life and it’s been FUN!

While I was away in Florida, my godson Aiden was born… And I just met him for the first time this past week. I still can’t believe he will be 4 months old already on Feb 1st. I swear this little guy was so funny during his shoot, that it about took all I had not to laugh myself stupid (((Haha))) so with that being said, enjoy your sneak peak.

I am a little late on this post, however I still wanted to post it just the same. So in review of my last year (2008) I noticed with my move and other life issues that I didn’t achieve my goal for 2008. That being said my goal for 2009 is to re-establish my business and it’s stability as well as gaining a much higher cliental, I will definitely have my work cut out for me, however I know this is an easy goal to achieve for me with a lot of hard work and experimenting this will be done. Okay so I will start with saying YES we are now in Michigan. YES it is crazy COLD... YES I am still asking myself did we make the right decision (((haha))) No but really things are a bit crazy in our lives right now, but it shouldn’t take to long to get things in order.

Anyways I figured since I was back in the land of the COLD I would share some good winter photo shoot tips:

WHITE ON WHITE
When shooting in the snow remember that your camera does not see white the same way the human eye does. A typical camera meter turns white into an 18% gray shade. Therefore, you need to trick your camera by opening up your lens by 2 f-stops. To do so, switch your camera to MANUAL mode and adjust the aperture setting +2. Most high-tech cameras have a SNOW mode, which makes taking winter pics a breeze. Another tip to remember: When shooting as the snow is falling, turn off your flash. Shooting with your flash on will only capture the snowflakes a few feet in front of you, and distort the rest of the shot.

BLUE ON WHITE
If you notice a blue tinge in your winter photos don't delete them. Snow reflects ultraviolet light and often appears blue in prints. If you encounter this situation simply edit your images by adding red and yellow tints in a photo editing program to get rid of the blue hues. Then, upload the edited image and print.

November 10th 2008 my family and I will be leaving Florida and heading back to Michigan what a FUN 1300 miles this should be!? I did a quick mini shoot of Shaylee & Harmonie in their Tutu’s and of coarse their BIG GIANT Loll Pops. They had a lot of fun running around pretending to be loll pop fairies (Seriously they were being too cute) To my surprise Shaylee was being the more photogenic one for a change which is completely odd considering she runs from the camera every chance she gets.

Who doesn’t just love this program!? I have been using it for some time now, basically getting by on the nitty-gritty of it. Doing all the basic processing and editing that I do on a norm, well since I have decided to add new creative items to my company I have been forced to learn more about the amazing Photoshop world and in return I am now 6% more knowledgeable when it comes to the program. WHAT!? 6 % is a LOT… this program is out of control HUGE! So on your average simple program that would make my percentage 28% more knowledgeable HAHA

Anyways, I did end up finding a pretty cool site where you can get all these free brushes. Make sure you click on this link and check it out!
Here is a little something that my daughter Shaylee and I made with some of the free brushes I got. YES she came up with the artistic pink texture background (not bad for a 2 year old) I wish I could take credit for it HAHA

Portfolio Building & Brown Recluse

I have decided to venture off to making invites and announcement along with all the other products and services we provide. I feel this will become a great contribute to my company and I’m excited about being able to offer my clients more photographic items!!! This coming week I will be sharing some of my new invite/announcement additions, so make sure to check back to see what’s in store! On to some personal news: My daughter Harmonie was bit by a spider on the 13th believed to be a Brown Recluse L Fortunately her aunty noticed the bite and I was able to take her right in. However about 2 ½ hours after arriving to what I believe to be the worst hospital in the world, Harmonie took a turn for the worst and went from her happy go lucky self to a baby in massive pain. I had never seen any child like this and it broke my heart, I was so confused on what to do to comfort her (although there was nothing I could do) besides help restrain her from plopping right off the hospital bed. Finally I had, had enough of watching my baby going through this I screamed out to the hall…Someone better get their A$$ in her and give my baby something NOW! Well it worked 2 seconds later the doctor came flying in the room with some feel good stuff. After 10 min. of rocking her she feel out and was resting somewhat peaceful. For those of you that have never heard of the FRIENDLY Brown Recluse… The spider is one of the worst to be bitten by. Within a matter of days this spider will cause the area bitten to start decaying and will eventually cause a heaping whole of decay wherever this bite took place. This spider also causes horrendous pain to the surrounding area of the bite, but it usually takes up to 3-6 hours for the pain to kick in. However she is doing great! She is on some powerful antibiotics and Bendryl as well as some Motrin when needed.

Normally people sigh at the thought of Monday approaching. Mondays are just HELLO… look at all the things you put off during the weekend! Well this weekend I stayed busy getting random things done that had to be done. So here I am on a Monday and I don’t feel all OMG what to do, where to start! Instead I will be taking the girls to the park and enjoy chasing after them for a couple of hours. YES I will be taking pictures! HELLO that’s what I do.

What is a "Home Portrait Party" you ask? You invite guests to come to your house or location of your choice to have a photo session; this could be a themed party of your choice, SAMPLE THEMES listed below. This is a low stress fun opportunity to have beautiful portraits made of yourself or your children in relaxed atmosphere.
You the host or hostess will schedule sessions for approximately 15-30mins depending on how many come, minimum of 6, maximum 12. I will take as many pictures as possible in allotted time. Each session is FREE yes FREE and there is no obligation to buy any prints.

Snapshots!!!

I was asked yesterday, by a friend if it was possible for me to take everyday average snapshots!? At first I thought well yeah… why couldn’t I? Then after thinking about it… I realized that since I have become a professional photographer that I don’t take snapshots anymore. I use to have tons of albums, just full of random pictures nothing really just simple everyday sitting around the house bored pictures. Those photos told a story though, when looking through my old albums it’s almost as if your right there and you can tell play by play how things worked out. Just everyday snapshots of us (My family) being completely who we are, no stage, no performed smile, no OMG I got the greatest shot ever JUST US. Now I just feel as though all of my photos must be perfect candid or posed. The snapshot part of me no longer exists since my life as a photographer began. Why? Why have I stopped taking those story-telling photos? IDK I guess I just expect more I expect them to always be professional quality. So my point to this blog today is… I have started taking snapshots again. OMG did it feel good to just not care, just fun photos of my girls acting crazy. I will admit that snapshots won’t be a huge part of me as they are in an everyday average person, but I most certainly want to do it more often so that my girls can see the story behind them.

Ok, so about 2 weeks ago I ordered a few things off line, that I have been waiting for impatiently I might add… and BAM it all came in yesterday!!! First box of goodies was my new wedding set (SO beautiful, I just LOVE my husband). The second box of goodies was a gift from my fabulous Granny Ruth… An awesome Coach bag and sunglasses that match, I LOVE THEM. Thanks Granny :~) and last BUT NOT LEAST… My new Nikon 50mm lens OMG I am in-love. However the mailman knocks so lightly that I didn’t hear him and had to go pick it up today. So anyways I’m standing in line at the post office and I can hardly stay put, I just felt like grabbing the guy behind and screaming HELLO I am here to get my fabulous 50mm lens!!! But I figured I should keep my excitement to myself and wait patiently while the lady in front of me was taking forever. The lady says next and I swear I had to keep myself from running to the counter, so I walk up there normal with a HUGE cheesing smile and hand her my slip. She say’s you must be here to pick up something great and I was like YES I am! I’m here for my new addition to the family. LOL well she just looked at me all-strange like and I just grabbed my box and left. No sooner did I get in my Durango I took a key to the box opened it up and started slightly jumping around in my seat all the while my 12 year old daughter is looking at me like I have lost my damn mind (haha) Regardless yesterday and today have been AWESOME!!!

The 411 cards

One of the hottest networking tools for high school seniors is the 411 card. I have taken a different spin on the traditional business card size and created a design that is wallet-sized. You can customize these 411 cards with their name, website (MySpace or Facebook), phone number and email. You can customize your image in any way you like as well as change the background, font and colors. There is also the choice between one-sided and two-sided cards depending on what the senior prefers.

Welcome to my new blog!!!

Yes I like change, however this was more then just that. I am working on a NEW project called…Getting Organized (Ha ha) and to help me do that, this change was necessary.
As you can see there are still things going on, so bare with me as I try to get things back to normal. I have made a few changes such as informational pages (under My Links) where you will be able to easily navigate certain parts of my blog. On other news I am now working on my new 2009 portfolio (2-books) which will be ready for viewing by new clients on January 1st 2009 I am actually really excited about getting this done. FAQ

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, but only for weddings. Portrait session payments are due in full at the beginning of the portrait session. Weddings require a $200 deposit at the time of booking in order to secure your date. The remaining 50% is due 2 weeks before the date of service.

Is there a reservation fee to book my appointment?
No, the only money due is at the time of you’re session and will be the session fee.

When should I book SJ Styles?
I recommend booking your portrait session at least 2-3 weeks in advance however short bookings are always welcomed depending on availability. We suggest that you consider hiring us between 6-8 months prior to the date of your wedding.Because of our quality and low prices, we fill up quickly so make sure to book your date ASAP. Remember, no wedding is considered booked with us until you have a signed contract.

What time of day should I schedule my photo session?

I am available upon request my hours are very flexible. The best time for photographing outside using natural lighting is early morning or late evening.

How long do the sessions last?
An average photo shoot will take about 1-2 hours depending on what you want.

What should I wear to the photo shoot?
Outside: Wear a mixture of solid colors with different light and dark hues. Make sure the colors blend well with others. Examples: Light Jeans and a black shirt or khakis and a blue shirt.

Studio: I use a black or white backdrop. Good colors to wear are solid colors. Bring one black shirt (v-neck is best) and one lighter shirt (like royal blue). Jean jackets and jeans look great.

Group Portraits: Make sure everyone wears solid colors and that they blend well with each other. Jeans and white shirts or jeans and black shirts work well. If there will be many families, each family should coordinate with their immediate family.
EVERYONE...Bring a changes of clothing!!

Do you have experience with children?
Yes! I have a certificate in Child Photography, as well as being a mother to three children. I also photograph just as many babies/children as I do weddings.

Can I bring my dog?
Pictures with dogs are great, but can be tricky because they (obviously) like to move. If we are doing the photo shoot at a place other than your backyard, your dog will want to explore and not sit for pictures. The best shots to do with dogs are ones where we are in your own backyard and you or your family are interacting with the dog rather than looking at the camera. These shots are fun, playful and casual. If we are shooting away from home and your dog is calm and well trained, sure bring your dog.

How do I get the shots that I want?
By providing me a list of a few shots that you want, you will be assured that I will make sure and get these shots before the shoot is over.

I can't decide on a location. Can you help?
Yes, I have several locations where I shoot. Feel free to contact me if you're having trouble deciding and we can discuss some options.

What about the weather?
Weather is really not a problem unless it is actively raining. Actually, cloudy conditions are preferred, if it rains, you have two options:1. I will gladly reschedule.2. Get out those boots and umbrellas and get ready to splash!

What if I have to re-schedule or cancel my appointment?
No problem, please try to let me know as soon as possible so that I can adjust my schedule accordingly.

Do you have a studio?
YES! I do have an in-home studio fully equipped; however my preference is to work outdoors/In homes.

What about proofs?
For your convenience, and because we use the newest digital technology, client proofs are provided via website. SJ Styles Photography does not supply physical proofs. Feel free to forward the link to friends and family! Website proofs will remain for four weeks. After the four-week period, the proofs are removed from the website. Orders are due on or before the deadline.

How long until I get my final prints?
Your final prints take approximately two-three weeks from your order date (does not allow mailing time).

What about re-touching?
SJ Styles will touch up the follow on a norm Acne, wrinkles, bags under eyes, age spots, these things are easily touched up.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Do you have backup equipment?
YES I have several Digital cameras from which I use.

Can I change the time or date of my event?
This is something that will need to be determined depending on availability.

Are you licensed and insured?
Yes

Do I get the copyrights to my images?
No, I never give copyrights out. I only give print permission when CD’s are purchased and or included.

Do you keep backups of my images at your studio?
YES, I will always have your photos.

FAQ for Weddings ONLY

Why do we have to sign a contract? (Weddings ONLY)
A contract must be sign in order to secure the date. The fact that we may have spoken on the telephone or had a meeting does not obligate either of us to each other. A contract puts all details in writing and makes your wedding run smoothly.

Do you require a retainer? (Weddings ONLY)
Yes we require a $200 retaining fee at the time of signing contract. Retaining fee is applied to your final balance.

What if I cancel my event? (Weddings ONLY)
SJ Styles Photography reserves your wedding date with a signed contract and the retainer fee. That means we will not be available to others who may call later looking to book our services. If you cancel your event 60 or more days before the event, you will lose only the given retainer. If you cancel your event 60-days or less, then you will be responsible for 50% payment of the contract excluding the retainer fee.

What if a hurricane comes? (Weddings ONLY)
Portrait sessions will just be rescheduled.

In the event of a hurricane and you have to cancel your wedding, we simply will transfer your retainer to a new wedding date. This transfer is good up to one year past the original event date. If no date is chosen during that period or if the wedding is permanently cancelled or occurs out of our area (Unless travel fees are paid for us to join you at your new location), then the retainer fee is lost.

When will you arrive? (Weddings ONLY
Portrait Sessions are as appointed.
We arrive one to two hours prior to the event at the location specified in your package.

Can you arrive at my house, hotel, or other location?
Depending on what packages was chosen YES. Additional fees may apply.

Can other people take photographs at my event? (Weddings ONLY)
Of course! We do not restrict the taking of photos by your family or guests. All we ask is that we be allowed to get our images first before everyone else takes a photo.

What if my church does not allow photographs during the ceremony? (Weddings ONLY)
Many religious organizations do not allow photographs to be taken during the ceremony. If that is the case at your church, we will make arrangements with church officials to recreate several scenes from your ceremony for photos(If needed most times this is not the case). We will not be responsible for images not obtained due to restrictions imposed by your church.

What if it rains on my wedding day?
The nature of our summer weather is afternoon rain on most days. All outdoor weddings must have a backup plan as SJ Styles will NOT provide services in the rain unless in an area of safety for my equipment.

There is a $200 deposit for SJ Styles Photography in order to reserve your date with us. The deposit is nonrefundable. It is due at the time of signing the contract and will be applied to your final balance. All wedding packages include a one hour engagement session with a FREE 8x10, and a FREE 5x7 of your choice with the exception of Package A which does not include an engagement session but can be purchased separately.
We have three styles of wedding packages to which you may choose from, if you do not see the package that is right for you please contact SJ Styles to customize a package for your needs.

Gallery Wraps

Our Gallery Wraps offer a striking way to present your images. We print your image on a special Canvas material and wrap it completely around the 1.5" or 2.5" stretcher bar. The outer edges of the stretcher bar are covered with the image. Standard sizes range from 11x14 to 30x40 with custom sizes available.

(Picture) 1.5" and 2.5" Depths Choose from 1.5" or 2.5" depths for standard sizes – 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 20x24, 20x30, 24x30, or 30x40. Custom sizes, such as squares, are also available.

(Picture) Backing Gallery Wraps are delivered "ready-to-hang". Backing material and a hanging device are added to the Gallery Wraps, including a saw tooth for 20x24 and smaller or a wire hanger for 20x30 and up.
